Choosing Between a GMT and a Submariner

Rolex Submariner Date reference 126610LV with green ceramic bezel, compared with the GMT-Master II reference 126710BLNR

The Submariner is a dive watch. Its rotating bezel tracks elapsed minutes — useful for timing a dive, a parking meter, or a steak. Its identity is tool-watch purity: legible, robust, no-nonsense.

The GMT-Master II is a travel watch. Its 24-hour rotating bezel tracks a second time zone, which is genuinely useful if you travel or work across time zones. Its identity is the jet-age professional.

On the wrist, they wear similarly despite the 1mm difference — the GMT-Master II at 40mm and the modern Submariner at 41mm — though the GMT's bezel numerals and the Submariner's dive scale give them distinct visual characters. The Submariner reads sporty and purposeful; the GMT reads a touch more cosmopolitan.

If you don't travel and don't need a second time zone, the Submariner's simplicity is hard to beat. If you do travel, or simply love the GMT complication, the GMT-Master II earns its place.

Both are excellent everyday watches. The honest answer is which one makes you look twice when you glance at your wrist — and that's something you only learn by trying them on.
